| Appraiser Comments: | This item is a genuine sperm whale tooth with a contemporary scrimshaw design. The artwork is rather crude and hastily done. The tooth in itself is the main feature of it's value with or without the scrimshaw work. I will base my appraisal assuming there are no drill holes or other trauma to the tooth as it appears to be mounted in some way to a wood base. (any drill holes could decrease the value by as much as 40%) Hopefully this is not the case. Do not advise any attempt to clean it, with the exception of a dust cloth. The patina and overall condition are in great shape. This tooth would also be of value to someone who would buff off the design and have a more higher quality scrimshaw engraving applied. The scrimshaw design on this tooth is worth about $75.00 to $100.00 at best. A higher quality design by a more professional scrimshander could run upwards to $2500.00. I will appraise the tooth with minimal consideration of the design currently on it. I did not see the small tooth pic -feel free to send pic for my appraisal. Glad to hear your roots are from the Whaling City-I'm across the bay in Fairhaven and live on West Island. Hope this info was of help to you. Keep in mind a slight dab of furniture polish like Lemon Pledge on the dust cloth would be OK to dust the teeth with. Best Regards MLBaron |
