Appraiser Comments: Hello, this is Joan Whatton. Your request for an appraisal has been referred to me for a reply. I have closely examined the information you have submitted. Thank you for the images and descriptive information. My findings are based on this information. The Berkey and Gay Furniture Co. started producing furniture in the mid 1800's. The company had its beginning in Grand Rapids, Michigan at 42 Canal Street and was incorporated in 1873, and became one of the leading furniture manufacturers in America. The furniture style and the use of the round brass Berkey and Gay plate date this ornate bedroom set C. 1900-1920. Most Berkey and Gay furniture of this era were made of walnut and walnut veneer. but the wood appears to be swirl and crotch mahogany; There is a demand for Berkey and Gay furniture in the market at this time. Berkey and Gay Furniture Factory is listed in the National Register of Historic places, certified December 20, 2000. Your set is in the style of Classic Revival and because the entire set is intact and in good condition for its age and use, I would value the suite between $10,200.00 and $12,000.00. The dressers and night table have cross stretchers and the long dresser has a back plate wih a compartment in the center (4 knobs), the legs are turned/block legs with bun feet. The attention to carving, inlay, detail , and the filligred hardware on the set are all Berkey and Gay's trademark. If you are thinking of selling, enlist the aid of a very reputable auction house in your area. The market comparison approach to value was used which estimates the value by comparison with properties sold in the relevant market, with adjustments made for all differences that affect value, such as differences in characteristics of value, in market layer, and in time. The values listed below may vary depending on how and where it is marketed. Kindest regards, Joan Whatton Associate Member American Society of Appraisers Jondre` Appraisal Services, LLC
