Appraiser Comments: Al Capone, America's best known gangster, is a symbol of the collapse of law and order in the USA during the 1920s. He is largely responsible for the image of Chicago as a place of lawlessness during that era.

Capone was born in 1899 in Brooklyn, NY. Even as a child, he was a gang member, eventually joing the famous Five Points Gang. HIs nickname, Scarface, was earned when he insulted a patron at a bar where he wa a bouncer, and was beaten by her brother.

He rose to become the head of all criminal operations in Chicago, until he was run out of town by the mayor who, although he had been doing business with Capone for years, felt the gangster was bad for his image. In 1928 Capone bought an estate in Palm Island, Florida, from which he continued to direct operations in Chicago. In 1929, Capone's men pulled of the St. Valentine's Day Massacre in Chicago, but Capone was in Florida at the time, so he could not be charged with the murders. He was arrested on weapons charges and othger petty crimes, but never convicted of any serious crime until the government found a way to prosecute him for tax evasion. After having been released from federal prison, his health began to deteriorate. He was known to have syphilis, and finally died from complications from a stroke in 1947.

Capone always signed his name, "Alphonse Capone" on official documents, and "Al Capone" for the publlic. Furthermore, the "a" in "Capone" has a tail in the front, a quirk that his legitimate signature always contained.

Documents signed by Capone are highly prized by collectors; at the very least you should provide some provenance to go with this card. A letter from the Miami Police Department employee from whom the document was obtained, swearing that it is authentic would be a help.

Before you try to sell this item, it would be advisable to have it authenticated, and to ascertain that the signature is original.

Since I am unable to examine this item in person, it is assumed for the purpose of this appraisal to be a legitimate arrest record of Al Capone, bearing his legitimate original signature, not a copy, and his legitimate photograph, made in either 1920 or 1930, in very good condition, but laminated. The values given below are based on these assumptions. Should it prove not to be authentic, it's value is virtually nil.
